As registered dietitians and personal trainers, this is one of our most popular requests–something that can really help you to start your morning on the right foot!  You love our drinks ( like our Orange-Lime Sparkling Refresher ,Kale Recharge and “Detox” Smoothie our Lemon Mint “Detox” Drink and our Blueberry Lemon Morning “Detox” Smoothie –thanks so much for letting us know! That makes our day! 🙂 :)) that help you after you overindulge. But this zippy juice shot is the ideal elixir to sip in the morning as it helps to put your body and mind on the healthy track for the entire day–and to help so that you don’t overindulge later!

Think about it- if you start the day off treating your body right, you will want to keep up the good work all day long. Need a kickstart to shake off the “sleepies” in the morning? This “detox” shot wakes you up and adds some pep to your step! Plus, it’s the perfect combo of sweet, sour and spicy.   Although your body is equipped to detox and cleanse itself on its own, naturally, certain health-promoting foods and drinks, assist it in its process. This like most of them will help to prevent you from feeling hungry and overdoing it on unhealthy foods as it fills your stomach — and contains anti-inflammatory phytonutrients and ingredients that help the body in it’s natural detoxification process. As you lose weight these nutrients become especially vital– they are needed to flush toxins including end products of fat metabolism. Since fat holds on to toxins, as you slim down, these rinsing ingredients are a key component in keeping your body healthy. OR if you overindulge, these same nutrients are key to get rid of those toxins!  Read how this works below.

What makes this juice such a miracle worker?

Lemon -we added it because it’s not only refreshing but its rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant and skin beautifier as it plays a role in collagen formation to keep skin elastic and youthful. This citrus is rich in potassium to help restore normal fluid balance and to flush out toxins (from everyday living–like stress and pollution and unhealthy foods with additives, etc.) along with bloat from sodium.

Ginger (as you know, Lyssie has a personal obsession with this one, so she couldn’t resist adding it even if it wasn’t as amazing for you as it is ;)) is known to soothe the stomach and intestinal tract, and has anti-inflammatory properties that protect cells from harmful free radicals. So this is perfect if you overindulged the day before on fatty, sugary or processed foods (they create inflammation) and if you’ve started the day with tummy troubles.

Apple (we’ve eaten one every day since high school and we truly think it has kept the doctor away!) adds a touch of sweetness that helps to balance the spiciness of the ginger and cayenne and the tartness of the lemon while flooding the body with powerful flavonoids that fight against cell damage and disease

Turmeric (another recent obsession for Lyssie after finding out its’ anti-inflammatory benefits help her sinuses during the recent seasonal allergies she just got for the first time in NYC–she even adds it to some foods she eats with her hands, like kale chips and turnip fries –and you can see the orange (powerful antioxidants) on her nails–oy!) is a spice and is a rock star when it comes to its’ anti-inflammatory properties as well as its’ powerful antioxidants. Studies show that it could even help treat neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Cayenne pepper adds a heat that lights that fire within! Its’ spiciness truly does lend a warming sensation, and it even helps to suppress the appetite, which is helpful, especially when getting back on track after overindulging. Some research suggests it may even help your body to burn a few extra calories.

This morning detox shot will have you feeling your best in no time! It may even cause you to look forward to rolling out of bed in the morning. 🙂

Morning Detox Shot

Serves 2

Ingredients:

Juice of 1 lemon

1 medium apple

1/4 inch knob of ginger or a dash of ginger powder

Dash of turmeric

Dash of Cayenne pepper

Directions:

Squeeze the juice of 1/2 a whole lemon into each glass. If using a juicer, juice apple and ginger, and add to the lemon juice. If you don’t have a juicer, don’t worry- you can use a high-powered blender with about 1/4 cup of water to make it easier to blend. Just note that the shot will be a little thicker from the fiber in the apple if you choose to go the blender route. Top off the shots with a dash of turmeric and cayenne pepper. Start off with a small amount of cayenne so you can see how much “heat” you prefer. Stir it all together, and sip away. If shots aren’t your thing, you can always add a cup of water to dilute the mixture and drink it up that way. Cheers!
