Cranberry Orange & Ginger Detox Drink

As registered dietitians and personal trainers, clients always ask us what they can do to stay on track, and of course this seems to be especially challenging when there are lots of celebrations, like during Memorial Day weekend or the holiday season—but let’s face it, even when there aren’t holidays eating healthfully can be a challenge. When your schedule is filled to the brim with anything from long work events to parties, holiday or not, you can wind up feeling bloated and heavy – and you better believe we’re no fans of that! Our solution to help you to stay trim, is one we’ve fallen in love with ourselves– our beloved “detox” drinks! They’re some of the most popular recipes on our blog and we’re obsessed with coming up with new flavor combinations to keep things interesting!

They’ve become so important in the success of our clients that we’ve even included them as an important part in our 21-Day Body RebootTM,  our life-altering program that helps you to lose your last 10 pounds or more—while going wild on the weekend You may remember some of our other faves!

Cucumber Blueberry Water Flush

Lemon Ginger Turmeric Tea “Detox”

Lemon Ginger Detox drink

Vitamin C Infused “Detox” Water

This cranberry, orange, and ginger festive flavor concoction will keep your taste buds satisfied! It was originally inspired during the holiday time to aid in flushing bloat and keeping you trim and slim (see below why it works!)in case you overindulged—but let’s face it, holiday time is not unique in that, so sip this baby any day of the year when you want to kick bloat to the curb! 😉

Here’s why this drink is a lifesaver:

It flushes bloat

It’s easy to get dehydrated, especially if you’re indulging in too many boozy drinks and salty snacks!  Your body likes salt to be at a very particular concentration in the body.  Eat too much salt and your body holds on to water to dilute the salt.  And when you hold on to excess water, guess what? You feel BLOATED & puffy!  ICK! Drinking plenty of water helps keep you hydrated so your body can flush excess sodium and waste, making you feel light and energized and since water also flushes waste (i.e., helps prevent constipation, keeping you regular and flushing out any gut bulges that come with the waste!)- hello flat-tummy!

Ginger: (Lyssie’s lov-ah! 😉 that shows up in everything she makes!) is rich in anti-inflammatory properties, while it also helps soothe your stomach and ease digestion, calming your insides so you can have a flatter tummy, helping you to reset after  a day of heavy foods.

It crushes sweet cravings

Sipping on this detox drink is our key to crushing sweet cravings!  As you know, we both have a sweet tooth, and it rears its’ head in the evening after dinner, when admittedly, we’re not truly hungry, just “snacky”. This yumster works it’s magic for us—it’s the ultimate sugar-tooth buster!  The natural sweet, tangy flavor of oranges and cranberries gives your taste buds the sweetness they crave without a ton of calories or sugar!  It’s so much easier to say no to another piece of chocolate or gingerbread man when your belly is already full of good-for-you food and drinks (like this lil’ number!).

It reduces inflammation

Cranberries and oranges are both packed with vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps boost your immune system and rid your body of toxins, keeping inflammation at bay. Ginger is also a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, chasing free radicals and other toxins out of your body.

When you get an injury, your body’s immune system responds with inflammation in a healthy way – but not all inflammation is healthy. When your body is taxed with constant inflammation from things like alcohol, refined sugars, and chemicals in processed foods, your body ramps up its inflammatory response and works in overdrive to keep you healthy. Keeping up with that constant inflammation takes a lot of work from your body and can wear down your immune system, leading to everything from the common cold to chronic health issues.

Eating and drinking foods with anti-inflammatory ingredients helps fight that constant inflammation so your body can work in tip-top shape! Since this detox drink is jam packed with anti-inflammatory goodness (but still tastes like a festive holiday mocktail!), it’s the perfect concoction to keep you healthy throughout the year!

Cranberries contain unique, health-promoting flavonoids called PACs.  PACs help reduce inflammation associated with chronic disease and aging (and as an added bonus, they also reduce the incidence of certain infections, maintain a healthy urinary tract and improve heart health).

(Fun fact! A recent study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that drinking 8-ounces of cranberry juice a day reduced the number of symptomatic UTIs by nearly 40 percent in women with recurrent UTIs.)

Our PACman & Cranberry linked- -Confession: We loved PACman as kids. (OK, and maybe a little bit as adults too! But that’s just because of the good memories we have from our past! 😉) We had blue pac-man shoes that we thought were THE BOMB and when you pressed your finger on the bottom, the imprint left a pacman shape impression on your hand, soooo cool!   We now realize the atrociousness of the shoes, but love them anyway.  Point? We’ve become bigger cranberry fans since learning they’ve got PACs—remind us of pacman–they gobble the bad stuff in your body to keep you healthy…

Our favorite part about this drink? It’s tasty enough to serve at a party or to keep in your fridge and sip all day (and week!) long! Don’t keep all the health benefits to yourself – the holiday season (and all seasons! 😊 ) are for sharing ;). Make a big batch of this Cranberry Orange & Ginger Detox Drink to share with everyone at your next holiday party to keep everyone happy and healthy.

Blueberry Protein Weight Loss Breakfast Smoothie

As registered dietitians and personal trainers we feel lucky to work with so many awesome clients.  Most want to have some fun and enjoy indulging but also know when it’s time to get back on track and tighten the reigns– and trust us, these twin sisters get it!  Yes, it’s not just our clients who at times feel like they need to undo the damage from too much–we, too have times when we just want to undo the damage that we did over the last couple of days from eating too much, drinking too much or just falling off the healthy track…and we’ve got just the morning dazzler to get your mind and body back on the fast track to slim–while losing the bloat and feeling satisfied!

Often we try to get right back on track with our Kale Recharge and Detox Smoothie or our Detoxifying Green Tea Smoothie which both work magic. We also sip our Raspberry Ginger Detox during the day. Or we go for this awesome Blueberry Protein Weight Loss Breakfast Smoothie! Aside from it being the perfect way to reboot the body (see below), this smoothie tastes yummy, so it’s ideal when your mind and taste buds aren’t feeling like they’re ready to dive in to very bland foods that many people believe are the only foods allowed when they’re trying to cleanse the body from the damage of overindulgence.  Admittedly, especially when we just get back from a vacay, our minds are still a little in la-la land 😉 and our taste buds want to be tantalized (this healthy, cleansing number does the trick!).

Although your body is equipped to detox and cleanse itself on its own, naturally, certain health-promoting foods and drinks, assist it in its process.  And this drink does just that!

This smoothie is a superstar when it comes to weight loss and flushing bloat and toxins from the body!  Here’s how it works:

For weight loss:

It’s super-satisfying– with just 224 calories, it will keep you satiated with it’s 20 grams of protein.  It will power you through your morning keeping your energy levels stable so you don’t experience an energy crash that would have you craving a quick sugar pick-me-up (this means you won’t find yourself diving into the vending machine mid-morning in search of an energy boost).

More reasons to sip this blue smoothie to assist in weight loss? 😉

The blueberries! Research suggests they actually may assist in weight loss (yippee!) since they contain the phytochemical C3G that may increase production of both adiponectin (which enhances fat metabolism) and leptin (which suppresses appetite). Oh yeah!

For flushing bloat:

Starting the day with this nutrient and water-filled smoothie helps to flush out excess salt and the bloated and puffy feeling that comes with it. The high water in combination with the potassium from the blueberry and lemon flushes bloat by restoring normal fluid balance so you can kiss puffiness goodbye.

The blueberries are loaded with fiber, which helps to flush waste out your colon (goodbye constipation and unsightly gut bulges from it–hello flatter belly. Oh Yeah!)

For mopping up free radicals and toxins that age and damage your body.  Here’s why we like to drink this smoothie in the morning:

There’s no better time to flood your body with nutrients that help to rejuvenate your cells and that help your liver to do its’ job of detoxifying invaders (chemicals, smog, toxins, alcohol, etc.) that could harm the body. However, you can drink this babe any time of day and it will still work is magic.

The blueberries flood your body with anti-aging and disease-fighting phytonutrients and anti-inflammatory compounds as well as bloat-fighting potassium and water!

Lemon helps to promote the activity of a liver enzyme that converts harmful, toxic substances to less harsh chemicals (via the liver through a compound called d-limonene.). Lemon, is packed with vitamin C, which is a potent antioxidant which mops up free radicals from environmental toxins, stress, alcohol, fatty foods and other toxins and helps to prevent them from damaging your body.

Raspberry Ginger Lime Detox Drink

Yes… drink this BEFORE the BBQ or event!
As you know, I (Lyssie) have confessed…I tend to have a few (some may say, a bit odd) favorite foods. BUT in my defense, some of Tammy’s favorites are just as odd, or at least almost as unusual! And if you didn’t know about them, you can check a few of them out here.

Funny thing is, some of my loves 😉 like ginger, lime and mint were actually born, thanks to YOU! That’s right, after you’ve requested detox drinks and flushes (hello Orange-Lime Sparkling Refresher, Lemon Mint Detox Drink, Morning Detox Shot,  Sparkling Cucumber Detox and Refresher,  Citrus Reboot and Detox Flush, and Kale Recharge Smoothie) to get back on the healthy track after overdoing it–and to get there ASAP…

I went tasting and testing…

And thanks to you, not only did I get some healthy and bloat –free bonuses, I fell in love! 🙂 –with some of my favorite foods.  And with some of my favorite lovers, Tammy and I’ve created this lil’ number to prevent you from ever truly needing the “aftermath” or “recovery” detox drinks that you often ask for (although you can use this after an overindulgence too).  Some of you and some of our clients who have had some of our  “pre-party drinks” like this have been requesting these lil’ saviors that start you off on the right foot, help you to feel light and bloat-free, prevent you from going off the overindulgence deep-end in the first place–and that help to protect your body, if you do! So here you have it, your party pleaser 😉

Oh–and one more thing! Great news! There is no wrong or right way to make this drink–that’s one of the reasons we love it– Intimidation factor -gone!  You can use as much or as little of any of the ingredients as you want–and even if you have to leave an ingredient out-that’s OK! You’ll see why below–and what the benefits are that you’ll reap regardless-and why we especially recommend it before hitting the pool party!

Raspberry_Ginger_Lime_detox

Psst… you’ll never believe what actually inspired this “detox” drink. It was a cocktail at NYC’s trendy Standard Hotel’s Biergarten. Really! We can’t believe it ourselves–but the drink had so many components that help to fight inflammation and the damage from too much overindulgence.  Plus it had anti-bloat ingredients and even a few potential fat-burning advantages–minus the splash of vodka that was in that drink, of course! 😉

Why we love this drink and why works it’s magic BEFORE the event:

1.It instantly gets your mind and body on the healthy track–i.e.- you’ll feel clean, lean & healthy and want to do less damage when you get to the event 😉

…and sometimes, the most important piece is just getting your mind on the healthy track–even if aren’t able to make this drink, at least drink a huge glass of water–because  just knowing you are starting your day by doing something good for your body can help set the tone for the entire day!

2. It helps to fill your stomach so you eat less when you get to the event.  Yes!–Drink this so you don’t show up ravenous and can avoid downing the hourderves– and the loads of calories (and the bloat!) that comes with those salty, high calorie numbers!

3. You’ll arrive at the event with a beauty and health leg- up–oh yeah! (Check this out for our fave ways to arrive bloat free.)  Since this drink counteracts sodium and the puffiness and bloat that comes with it, you’ll feel lighter.  We’re the first to admit we don’t enjoy feeling bloated from having too much salt or being constipated. That’s why you better believe this drink both hydrates and provides potassium to help you to flush out bloating sodium from your body, “de-puffing” you by restoring normal hydration status.

—-and when you stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluid, you’ll get your digestive tract moving and prevent any bloat from constipation! Who’s got your back…and your belly, baby? We do! 🙂

Tips to remember:  There is no wrong way to make this!  Simply add the ingredients and remember to drink it–and you’re golden! 😉

So cool!!–Even more reasons you benefit your health and beauty when you arrive at the event after this drink (If you’re a science nerd like us, you’ll love this part too 😉 ) :

The vitamin C:

It’s coming from the raspberries, lime and from the mint and will make your skin glow by promoting collagen formation. (Plus being hydrated from this drink helps your skin to glow and you can kiss goodbye to a puffy face and eyes as it flushes bloating salt). 🙂
It acts as an immune-booster to help strengthen your body to prepare it for any havoc it may go through.

The lime:

We love lemons and limes and really spritz them over everything! They are a great flavor sub for salt too. Pssst…careful when you open Lyssie’s fridge–a lime from the packed cold-zone may drop out on your toe!

• The ideal flushing food–packed with potassium and water to restore normal fluid balance and flush out any bloating salt that may be causing you to store water and puffiness.
• Great source of vitamin C

Ginger:
By now you know, this is one of our faves, especially Lyssie, who tosses it in everything she eats, she must think it’s candy! (healthy candy, of course! 😉 )  Ginger soothes the stomach and intestinal tract, and has anti-inflammatory properties that protect cells from harmful free radicals. Ginger is ideal to help you to reset your body so you can arrive at the event with a calm, intestinal tract, free of tummy troubles and bloat.

Mint:

We like to think of mint as a peace maker in the body 😉 It eases indigestion and calms the stomach, possibly by improving the flow of bile through the stomach, which helps to speed and ease digestion. Thanks in part to it’s anti-inflammatory antioxidant rosmarinic acid, it “calms your insides” to ease the havoc inside your body!

Raspberries:

Research suggests they actually may assist in weight loss (yahoo!) because they contain the phytochemical C3G that may increase production of both adiponectin (which enhances fat metabolism) and leptin (which suppresses appetite).  Plus, raspberries powerful, anti-aging and disease-fighting phytonutrients arm your body for any assault coming it’s way! Oh yeah!

Raspberry Ginger Lime Detox Drink

Remember– There is no right or wrong way to do this. Use as much or as little as you like for each ingredient. We also often use a water infuser bottle–we put all the ingredients in the center piece and then just keep the seltzer or water around and let the ingredients infuse into them.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup raspberries

2 sliced limes

2 teaspoons chopped or pureed ginger

10 fresh mint leaves

3 quarts water (12 cups)

Directions:

Add limes, mint leaves, raspberries, and ginger to three quarts of water. Allow the mixture sit in a covered pitcher for at least 2 hours–or overnight and feel free to muddle the fruits with a wooden spoon.  Then serve it hot or chilled (over ice).  Feel free to strain after sitting over night and simply reserving the liquid.  We actually often place our ingredients in a cartridge made for water infusion bottles and then take that out and just drink the water that’s left.  And remember– There is no right or wrong way to do this. Use as much or as little as you like for each ingredient–and you can even use seltzer instead of water if you and your body like the bubbles!

Cocoa Banana Burst Breakfast Smoothie

As you likely know by now, we’re not only registered dietitians and personal trainers who love veggies, but we also have a sweet tooth.  We like to blame our Grandma Bubby for it, who was sweet as could be and had a big sweet tooth, too! 😉  In fact, Lyssie even has a long left canine (in school she used to get teased about having a shark tooth) that is responsible for hers and she’ll stab ya with if you get in the way of her sweet! 😉

As you can imagine, we have many tricks up our sleeves to tame our sweet tooth– and our clients’– and yours, too! One of the best secrets? By including natural sugars like those in fruits (that also come with fiber and health-promoting nutrients) you can really prevent your sweet tooth from getting the best of you.  It really helps to fight cravings!  We find that many of our clients tame their sweet tooth if they give it a little healthy love at breakfast.  That’s why we’ve created these smoothies: Blueberry Lemon Detox SmoothieMatcha Green Tea Smoothie,  Rise & Shine Delicious Smoothie  Wake Up Smoothie and now this Cocoa Banana Burst Breakfast Smoothie.

Watermelon Snow Cone

For us, there’s nothing better than a cool refreshing treat on a warm summer day. When we were growing up our mouths would water when we’d see the ice cream truck selling snow cones and we’d long for one! Our mom would sometimes let us have a treat from the truck but always steered us towards other cold treats telling us that the snow cone’s sugary syrups on the ice were full of artificial dye and were just sugar. It turns out, mom was right (again!! Ahhh!—and funny enough, Tammy now does the same with her daughters!)—plus the typical snow cone will set you back 200-400 calories, depending on the size. So we’re happy to bring you one that’s just the opposite—all natural and only 30 calories!

watermelonsnow2

This healthy twist on a snow cone is naturally flavored with the juice of a sweet watermelon and deliciously complemented with a hint of fresh lemon juice. This thirst-quenching delight is more than 50% water, so it will help to keep you hydrated!
