Citrus Reboot and Detox Flush

Looking to beat the bloat? If you overindulged and now your tummy is letting you know that you’re paying the price for doing so (i.e. it’s uncomfy, distended or talking out loud–eeks!- we’ve all been there!)), this is the drink for you!

We’ve gotten requests from our clients and from you too, asking for help for these situations where you feel you have to take desperate measures to get results—but don’t worry, you don’t have to! This flush will do just the trick to get you back on the slim track. 🙂  So, if overindulgences are making you crave a “toxin” flush, this is just the restorative drink you’re craving.  While your body does a great job of “detoxing” naturally, on it’s own, certain foods and their powerful nutrients have the ability to assist it, in it’s process.  This refreshing number does just that as it floods the body with anti-inflammatory antioxidants while immediately getting your mind and body back on the healthy track. (See below for two of our recent obsessions that work their magic 😉 ).

Simple and refreshing, yet potent, this elixir will help restore normal fluid balance by flushing out bloating salt, thanks to the water and the citrus fruits’ potassium which work in tandem. (Pssst, if you want more simple recipes to help you flush bloat, try our Sparkling Cucumber Detox and Refresher or our Kale Recharge Smoothie.) And this drink will work its’ magic for only 3 waist-line friendly calories!

We included citrus fruits since they are also packed with vitamin C which helps to boost your immunity and to prevent free radicals from damaging your cells and from causing inflammation.
Meanwhile both ginger and turmeric have powerful anti-inflammatory capabilities (we’re a bit obsessed with both, step into our kitchens—or just check out some of our recipes and you’ll see what we mean! Hello Soy Ginger Salmon and Ginger and Carrot Slimdown Smoothie  :)); they help to restore the body by preventing some of the cell damage that is caused by unhealthy foods (think fried and processed foods) and drinks (cocktails). Plus, ginger helps to calm your stomach by alleviating symptoms of gastrointestinal distress and relieving nausea. It promotes elimination of intestinal gas and acts as an antispasmodic by relaxing and soothing the intestinal tract—of course this all means, less bloat, puffiness and a flatter tummy! Oh yeah! 🙂

You’ll feel at ease knowing that the phytonutrients (thanks ginger, turmeric and citrus fruits) in this drink are hard at work preventing damage and inflammation on the inside. Yes, you can relax your mind, reboot, relax and recharge, knowing you’re doing something good for yourself! You’ll be calmer on the inside to allow for restoration!

Colorful Detox Salad

OK, you already know about our unusual love affair with veggies.  But really one of the major reasons why we are obsessed is because we are in awe of all they do for us–a big reason we wrote The Nutrition Twins’ Veggie Cure.  And, this salad is the perfect example.

Let’s face it, we’ve all had those days (or entire weekends) where we’ve had a few too many indulgences that we wish we could erase.  (Yes, we did have 4 friends celebrating their birthdays this weekend and we feel a bit off kilter and not so healthy [ah!] after having eaten every meal away from our veggie-filled kitchens ;)).  Like you’ve told us you had, we too have had those feelings of regret and aren’t thrilled when our pants feel a little extra snug. That’s why we love this little cruncher!  We created it to help “rinse” out some of the puffiness and bloat (see how it works its’ magic below!).  Plus, it fills you up with fiber so that you’re not starving and don’t end up with low blood sugar and craving more of the bad stuff.  And if you want more recipes like this to help you, try our Roasted Detoxifying Veggies,  our Veggie Detox Salad and our Kale Recharge Smoothie.

Drum roll please… meet your hero! Hello Colorful Detox Salad! It fills you up, not out, gets your mind and body immediately on the healthy track and helps the liver in its’ detox process! Woohoo! Hello Slim! 😉

Colorful_detox_salad

Here’s why this works:
o You’ll save a lot of muffin-top promoting calories when you fill up on this (34 calories) versus the hundreds of calories for each doozy that you crave and now that you skip.
o This Slimming Salad acts like a “flusher” — We made sure this was rich in water and helps you to “rinse” out bloating sodium from your body, “de-puffing” you and make you feel lighter. The potassium from the veggies will also fight bloat as it helps to restore normal hydration status.

o The veggie’s vitamin C in the Slimming Salad will make your skin glow by promoting collagen formation.  We wanted to make sure it would do all this plus it will hydrate your skin (ie, you’ll glow) and you can kiss good bye to a puffy face and eyes.

Indulged in alcohol, been around cigarette smoke, or eaten a bit too much processed food? More reasons why this Detox Salad works!
o The cruciferous veggies like cabbage (if you add broccoli, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts to the salad, they all do this too, and happen to be some of our faves in the animal kingdom!) help the liver to flush out harmful toxins

  • Sulforaphane, a phytochemical (and others) in cruciferous veggies activates the enzymes that detoxify before damage to cells is done

o Bah bye damage and toxins!
Hello Veggies, Adios toxins!  Veggies all contain phytonutrients to stave off damage from invading particles
o *Glutathione, a protein in veggies clings to toxins and drags them out of our body! Top choices- asparagus, potatoes, peppers, carrots, onion, broccoli, avocados, squash, spinach, garlic, tomatoes

*Notice we created this salad that is fresh, not cooked.  That’s because cooking or processing decreases the glutathione bioavailability.

The Lemon: (we spritz lemon on everything, it’s an awesome substitute for salty flavors)

• The ideal flushing food–packed with potassium and water to restore normal fluid balance and flush out any bloating salt that may be causing you to store water and puffiness.

• Let’s face it, when you don’t eat right and you overindulge in junk, you put your body to the test. Lemon gives you a shot of vitamin C and acts as an immune-booster to help strengthen your body after all the havoc it’s just been through.

• Helps to neutralize free radicals before they can do any further damage and prevents inflammation so that the body can stay calm.

Lemon Ginger Detox Drink

As you know, I (Lyssie) have confessed…I tend to get a few (some may say, a bit odd) obsessions. BUT in my defense, Tammy’s obsessions are just as odd, or at least almost as unusual! 😉  And if you didn’t know about them, you can check a few of them out here.  But what you may not know, is that while we were writing our latest book, The Nutrition Twins’ Veggie Cure we called Lyssie, “Mikey”.  That’s right, just like the little boy, Mikey, on the Cereal Commercial, Lyssie had that same, excited expression every time she tried any recipes we tested for our book.  She didn’t seem to have even one discerning taste bud.  And what we soon learned was that if ginger was in the recipe, she not only liked it, but LOVED it.  And a new obsessions was born 🙂 !

Lyssie now adds ginger to everything. (Hello Soy Ginger Salmon, Kale Recharge Smoothie, Ginger and Carrot Slimdown Smoothie, Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Shallots and Ginger, Ginger-nana Pineaplle Smoothie!-just to name a few creations). It tastes awesome and gives everything a little kick, plus it really seems to help fight inflammation and our clients love that when you’re feeling a bit puffy (read about this below) it seems to work wonders at getting your body back to normal!

And Lyssie whipped up this de-puffing number! 🙂  We both drink this all the time, especially when we need make an appearance and need to feel confident. 😉  This is the ideal drink if you overindulged on food and drinks and your intestinal tract is not letting you forget it, i.e.–you’re feeling bloated and your tummy is just full of discomfort.  You simply need to calm down your insides so they can start settling down, repairing, de-puffing, restoring and rinsing the bloat.  Your body responds to poor food choices and toxins with inflammation.  Chronic inflammation in the body leads to diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.  So preventing that inflammation means not only will you have a less less inflamed inside and less stomach distress, but also that you’ll be healthier in the long haul!

Ginger Lemon Detox Water

This drink is so simple, yet it works wonders.  Here’s why:

The ginger:Ginger_1teaspoon_ginger_lemon-detox

  • We added Lyssie’s obsession, ginger, which is often used to aid in digestion by alleviating symptoms of gastrointestinal distress and relieving nausea. It promotes elimination of intestinal gas and acts as an antispasmodic by relaxing and soothing the intestinal tract (goodbye puffiness and bloat, hello calmer, flatter tummy!)
  •   Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, so it protects the cells from damage done by free radicals and other toxins–like those from not-so-great food and drink choices.

The Lemon: (you’ve likely realized this is no stranger to our healthy recipes 🙂 )
