In Season, en vogue, so delicious…Avocados!!!

We’re wild about avocados. And guess what? They’re in season and in high demand!

Avocados are a nutrition powerhouse; they’re a great source of phytosterols which help control and lower blood cholesterol. They’re packed with antioxidants, B-vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids, so they keep inflammation at bay, helping us to keep our heart healthy, fight arthritis and slow the signs of aging. And avocados help to keep your eyes healthy– 1/5 of an avocado has 81 mcg of lutein!

So, don’t let the fat content of avocados keep you away, the fat is the good-for-you mono-unsaturated fat.. Just stick to 2 Tbsp/1/5 avocado/1 ounce, which is about 50 calories to keep the calories in check.. When eaten along with other vegetables, or as a compliment to beans and rice as in a lot of Mexican dishes, avocados aid the body in absorbing important fat soluble vitamins and minerals.

A Few of Our Favorite Quick Ways to Get ‘Em:

  • Use chopped avocados as a garnish for black bean soup.
  • Mix chopped avocados, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, lime juice and seasonings for a rich-tasting twist on traditional guacamole.
  • Spread ripe avocados on bread as a healthy replacement for mayonnaise when making a sandwich.

Enjoy! Ole! Do you use avocados on your sandwiches as spreads?
