Healthy Burgers and Fries

Adding to this week’s theme of helping you to achieve your New Year’s Resolutions, another dinner classic comes to mind: hamburgers and fries! There are so many different varieties of hamburger and fry combinations; how do you pick just one? Turkey burger? Bison burger? Sweet potato fries? Steak fries? The list is endless! In our homes we like to stick with this delicious recipe for bison burgers and make our own homemade sweet potato fries.

Homemade Bison Burgers

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of ground bison
  • 1/2 cup of fat free feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1/2 cup of spinach, cooked and drained
  • 1 tsp of cumin
  • 1 tsp of oregano, chopped
  • 2 tsp of dill, chopped
  • 1 tsp of garlic
  • 1/2 tsp of pepper

Preheat grill to medium heat and mix together all of the ingredients; be careful not to over mix. Separate the meat mixture into four patties and cook on each side for 5-6 minutes or until the center of the patty is 155F. Makes 4 servings.

Sweet Potatoes Fries

Ingredients:

  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 2 tsp of canola oil
  • a pinch of cayenne pepper
  • a pinch of pepper

Preheat oven to 450F and peel and cut sweet potato into wedges. Toss together the wedges, oil, pepper, and cayenne pepper. Bake wedges for about 20 minutes; until the edges are browned and flipping over once. Makes 2 servings.

Ready for this? Each serving of sweet potato fries is 115 calories and each bison burger is only 175 calories. Wow! A full meal for only 300 calories; can’t beat that! As with all of our meals, we add a large salad and a big serving of steamed veggies. Do you have any tips you use when you lighten up your burgers or fries?
