The Perks of Gardening

Are you looking for ways to get outside and enjoy the beautiful summer weather? How about planting a garden! Gardening a great excuse to spend time outside, a calming activity, a chance to be creative, a way to beautify your house, and a great way to squeeze in some moderate cardiovascular and strengthening exercise. When gardening, you can burn between 200 and 400 calories per hour. Mowing the lawn with a push mower burns about 400 calories/hour; raking burns about 270 calories/hour; weeding burns about 300 calories/hour; clearing land burns about 340 calories/hour. The combination of being outside (a great way to get your daily dose of vitamin D!) and being active will give you an energy boost for the rest of the day. And an added bonus – if you decide to plant fruit and vegetables, you’ll have delicious and healthy home-grown foods, high in vitamins and minerals that strengthen your immune system and keep your energy levels high, to snack on or add to your meals!
