All Natural Bug Repellent

As the days stay lighter longer and we stay more active outside, it is only inevitable that we get mosquito bites. They are the down side to summer fun and can be avoided with some simple, natural repellents! Most bug repellents contain DEET which is effective but also a toxic substance. Some simple essential oils work just as great and can be made at home! Just mix the essential oils with some carrier oils and alcohols to make your own natural bug repellent. It is that easy to stay protected and active during these long summer days.

The recipe to make a large batch at home is to mix one part essential oil with 10-20 parts carrier oil or alcohol. For a smaller batch use 10-25 drops (total) of essential oil and two tablespoons of a carrier oil or alcohol. (Recipe from By Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D., About.com Guide)

The essential oils that work well against biting insects:

  • cinnamon oil (mosquitoes)
  • lemon eucalyptus or regular eucalyptus oil (mosquitoes, ticks, and lice)
  • citronella oil (mosquitoes and biting flies)
  • castor oil (mosquitoes)
  • orange oil (fleas)
  • rose geranium (ticks and lice)

Safe carrier oils and alcohols include:

  • olive oil
  • sunflower oil
  • any other cooking oil
  • witch hazel
  • vodka
